Had a quick trip to Utah, where I got to see the Bonneville Salt Flats. I have a few pictures of Great Salt Lake too, but they aren’t great. I didn’t have much time to see it, the sun was setting, and there were a lot of mosquitoes out for blood.
Definitely one of the prettiest landscapes I’ve seen throughout my life. Utah is a mix of deserts, plains, and mountains. The climate gives them everything from snow-capped mountains to hot, dry deserts. Driving through the land was spectacular.
History of the salt flats
About 1/3 of Utah used to be covered by an ancient lake called Lake Bonneville. This lake had no rivers that flowed out of it, so water could only leave by evapourating. As the climate became drier, more and more water evapourated and left behind minerals. The Bonneville Salt Flats is the remnant of all the lakewater evapourating and leaving a very flat layer of salt. The current Great Salt Lake is what remains of Lake Bonneville.
